Rapids sign Burch, re-sign LaBrocca and Alvarez…

The Rapids on Friday made official the re-signings of Nick LaBrocca, and Carlos Alvarez. While also signing Marc Burch to a new contract. Full story here.

I’m excited about Alvarez re-signing but not so much about the re-signing of LaBrocca aka Pablo’s favorite player. He’s experienced in the midfield sure and adds to the depth at that position for the club, but one has to wonder at times what he’s thinking on the pitch. He’s the one player on the team that worries me most when he is on the ball. Hopefully with the additional competition at the midfield position to the team this offseason, we will see lesser of LaBrocca on the pitch.

Rapids decline options on 11, pick up option on Cascio

It’s been a busy day for the Rapids so far as we approach the expansion draft for NYCFC and Orlando City along with the waiver draft, etc. The Rapids declined the contract options on several players. Edson Buddle, Marvell Wynne, Nick LaBrocca, Joe Nasco, Danny Mwanga, Davy Armstrong, Carlos Alvarez, Grant Van De Casteele, Gale Agbossoumonde, Thomas Piermayr and Kamani Hill. It’s possible that any of these players could return to the Rapids for 2015 prior to going into camp in January, but we’ll see.

The Rapids did exercise the option on Tony Cascio for next season. Cascio who played for the Dynamo on loan in 2014, sitting out most of the season with a torn ACL.

Speaking of the Dynamo, they declined the option on Omar Cummings’ contract. How about this? Bringing back the fellow Jamaican, (not to mention fan favorite) to be the threat up top that Buddle couldnt do and to help Deshorn Brown along in his development as a striker? All at a lesser cost of course. How about it Bravo?

The Full 90 – Rapids vs Timbers observations…

Just a few thoughts on the Rapids and some other observations from last night’s match.

Thank you soccer gods, the losing streak is finally over! Finally.

Officiating was questionable more times than not. I’m playing nice when I say that.

The Rapids overall looked better than they have since the losing streak started. It was great to see Shane O’Neill, and Kamani Hill back on the field.

I admit that earlier in the week the Colorado Rapids website stated the goal keeping position was up for grabs, I honestly didnt think Berner would get the start over Irwin. Irwin’s confidence hopefully hasnt been shaken, but you can understand why if that’s the case. The number 1 keeper has now not started in the teams last 3 games. It’s obvious Pablo is either truly searching for answers or playing mind games, or both, but we cant be sure which it is. Things become more intriguing the week ahead when Nasco is available to play again coming off his red card suspension. Who will Pablo give the start to this week?

Deshorn Brown in the second half was the most aggressive that we’ve seen him since early in the season. He’s still dangerous to opposing teams just stepping on the field, but I would like to see much more of the same intensity out of him. He and Vicente Sanchez have formed some chemistry when on the pitch together, but unfortunately Sanchez wasnt available for this game. Both Carlos Alvarez and Kamani Hill played well on the wings of the 4-5-1, hopefully this will bring the team some added success in the future.

Next up, the third leg of the Rocky Mountain Cup with Real Salt Lake. Even though Salt Lake has already claimed the cup for this season, there’s still plenty to play for in this game. Despite the level of intensity having fallen off in the rivalry, it’s still Salt Lake and the Rapids should be hungry to try and steal 3 points on the road. Which should make for an interesting and hopefully entertaining match Friday night.

With 6 games to go and 6 points out of a playoff spot, the Rapids can gain ground this week with a win at Salt Lake. Let’s go Rapids!!!
