Burgundy Headlines for June 1st…

Here are the headlines for today, including the last couple days.

In what comes as a surprise to most everyone this morning, Tim Hinchey just granted the wishes of many of the Rapids faithful. Hinchey will be leaving the Rapids front office to take over as President & CEO of USA Swimming as reported in a press release by USA Swimming.

Switchbacks FC fail to advance in last night’s match against OKC Energy FC in the 3rd round of the US Open Cup, missing out on a 3rd straight meeting with the Rapids this season. The Rapids will face Energy FC for the first time. Game according to ussoccer.com is scheduled for June 13th. 3rd round US Open Cup results and 4th round schedule here.

No Bobby Burling for this weekend’s match again the Crew SC, thanks to the Disciplinary Committee. No Howard due to US National team duties. No Watts possibly with a calf injury. Mekeil Williams is possibly also out as he is training with Trinidad & Tobago this week for the upcoming WCQ against the US next Thursday. So the back four for Saturday looks like it could be Hairston, Sjoberg, Ford and Miller to start.

Congrats to Conor Casey who will join the Rapids Gallery of Honor on Saturday.

Rapids re-sign Burling…

An important piece to the Rapids back line re-signed today in veteran Bobby Burling. Burling in what will be his 11th season, (2nd with the Rapids) made 22 appearances, all starts last season(1958 mins), scoring 2 goals. Burling also wore the captain’s armband a number of games last season as well. Welcome back, Bobby!

The Full 90: Week 1 – Rapids at Union recap…

I finally got the chance to watch the season opener against the Union and here are my thoughts on the game.

The GOOD – Defensively, the Rapids were there, even when they were playing down a man in the second half after the Burling dismissal. They were physical, they attacked the ball, dominated the aerial battles, winning 62% of those. Irwin was great in net. Sjoberg was more than solid in his first start of his rookie MLS campaign.

The BAD – Offensively only two shots, zero on goal. Possession 38%, too many turnovers and too many balls played over the top. Little creativity from the midfield. Midfield play further declined after Sanchez substitution.

The UGLY – The second yellow and red card send off of Bobby Burling in the 67th minute. The winless streak continues.

Synopsis – I know we’re only one game in, but this is a much better Rapids team defensively from what we saw in the second half of the season last year. Midfield needs to control possession better and create opportunities moving the ball forward. Still a well earned point for the Rapids on the road to start the season. If the playoffs started today, we would be in, LOL!
