The GOOD – Better game overall than the previous against OCSC the previous weekend. More shots (15) on goal, though only 1 was on target. Gashi has found his left foot again, and played a full 90, this is a great thing. Powers played well at the D-Mid position next to Azira. Rapids supporters standing in the 24th minute in support of Rapids homegrown player Kortne Ford whose mother is fighting breast cancer.
The BAD – Officiating, but certainly not the reason the Rapids lost the game. The back line played better overall until the counter attack late in the second half, leading to the Brek Shea goal. 5 losses in a row, the spiral continues.
The UGLY – Mekeil Williams’ red card. Who will play left back on Saturday? Personally I would like to see Dennis Castillo get the call up from Charlotte. Or do we see Mike da Fonte get the start this week?
The Final Third – Another late game collapse from the Rapids, a scenario we’ve seen way too much of. The Rapids have 7 of their next 10 games at home and could really turn things around on the season. A win this weekend will help that.
The Rapids will try again to get in the win column this Saturday as the San Jose Quakes roll into town. Sjoberg has been seen on the practice field this week.
This week’s Throwback Thursday featured player is former Rapids defender Anthony Wallace. Wallace played for the Rapids 4 seasons from 2010-2013, making 23 appearances and 15 starts.
Following the 2013 season, Wallace made 24 appearances for the NASL’s Tampa Bay Rowdies in 2014. Anthony Wallace last played in MLS in 2015, where he also spent time with Red Bulls II in the USL. 2016 Wallace signed with the Jacksonville Armada. As recently as March, Wallace signed with the OKC Energy FC of the USL for the 2017 season.
Rapids coach Pablo Mastroeni talk to Altitude Sports 950 earlier today about the upcoming match against Vancouver, the return of Tim Howard, the 2017 season and that Four Four Two article from a week ago.
The 11 and a half minute interview is interesting if nothing else. As usual Pablo doesn’t give definitive answers about anything. That’s not to say he is hiding anything necessarily, but that he just doesn’t give you a solid answer to anything to make you want to believe him and anything he says. (See Sean Spicer)
As a supporter and season ticket member I personally still have little to no faith in him as a coach of this club. I will certainly give him credit for 2016, and I will for this season if we can somehow turn this thing around. That all begins this weekend, something I know we’ve said each week since the draw to Minnesota United FC back on March 18th at home.
We’re back after some time away and we’ll do a little catching up of happenings over the last week or so. I have yet to have a chance to watch last weeks match against OCSC, so there isn’t a Full 90 recap written this week.
Interesting and eye opening article from Four Four Two on the Rapids season thus far and why things are going the way they are and how that seems to be the plan for 2017.
There are a couple of good things happening this week. The Rapids return to DSGP Friday to take on WhitecapsFC. Maybe they can start another unbeaten streak at home. US international Tim Howard returns this week from his 3 game suspension and I would expect him to be in goal Friday night against Vancouver.
