OK, playing catch up from a few headlines from last week.
Despite training camp opening for the Burgundy Boys in Boulder, last week it was all about former Rapids player Conor Casey. The rumor of the former Rapids striker joining the Rapids coaching staff has come to fruition.
Still no word on whether Casey’s addition to the Rapids coaching staff is in place of John Spencer or not as was first rumored.
And while we’re on the subject of one Conor, another Conor finds a new home, see below.
Welcome back Conor Casey! Best of luck in Puerto Rico Conor Doyle!
It’s been a busy 24 hours for the Rapids since the 2017 preseason opened yesterday for the Rapids.
Welcome Alan Gordon! Welcome Bismark! Good signings by the RFO. This makes up for the loss of Jermaine Jones and brings some additional experience to the forwards.
Playing a bit of catch up for the week. Hear are some of the headlines.
Best wishes to Marco Pappa as he returns to Guatemala and his home club CSD Municipal.
The preseason schedule doesn’t offer really any surprises, except maybe the 5 days to be spent training up in Boulder.
Huge congratulations to former Rapid Herculez Gomez in his retirement. Gomez will be going into television as an analyst for ESPN.
The Rapids have had the habit of bringing back former players into the fold. Might we one day in the future see Herc on the Rapids sideline in some capacity?
Rounds 3 & 4 of the MLS SuperDraft were held on Tuesday and the Rapids added a pair of forwards in Jaime Siaj and Peguy Ngatcha. Welcome to the club!
MLS held the first 2 rounds of the 2017 SuperDraft yesterday in Los Angeles.
The 2017 league schedule was finally released on Wednesday, along with a new match ball design. The new ball design looks incredible!
Highlights for the 2017 Rapids schedule are of course the season/home opener March 4th against the New England Revolution. Other highlights include…
March 18 – Minnesota United – first ever meeting between the expansion United and the Rapids
April 15 – Real Salt Lake – First leg of the Rocky Mountain Cup
June 24 – @ Atlanta United – First ever meeting between Rapids & the ATLU
July 4 – Seattle Sounders FC – First meeting since the Western Conference playoff finals of 2016.The stakes will be different in this matchup but I expect the Rapids to show a decidely different team this time around.
Congratulations to Tim Hinchey for adding to his award case with winning the MLS Exec of the Year for 2016! Well deserved.
Welcome to Rapids draft picks midfielder Sam Hamilton(15th overall, Univ of Denver) and defender Liam Callahan(24th, Syracuse Univ). The Rapids have added two players from the University of Denver this week with the signing of homegrown player Kort Ford.
Finally a huge congratulations to Rapids defender Jared Watts, who was married last weekend.
Rumblings last evening of a switch in assistants on Pablo’s staff? Burgundy Wave using unnamed sources report that John Spencer is leaving the Rapids, possibly headed to San Jose and that another former Rapids player will take on an assistant coaches position, in Conor Casey.
Still no official word from either the Rapids, John Spencer or Conor Casey. I guess we’ll wait and see how this shapes up.
After a weekend of watching a little FA Cup action and some La Liga and Serie A matches, it’s time to turn the attention back to the Rapids.
Burgundy Wave and Ghanasoccernet.com both report the Rapids are buying Ghanian winger Gilbert Koomson from his current team Songdal of the Tippeligaen, the top flight in Norway. Ghanasoccernet.com says the deal should be finalized sometime this week.
Last week saw the departure of Paul Bravo from the RFO and although these are only rumors, it looks as if another piece to the front office could be leaving as well. El Piojo, as he is known to Valencia supporters, Claudio Lopez is one of those rumored to be a candidate for Sporting Director at his former club Valencia CF according to superdesporte.es out of Spain. Again rumors.
As someone who is also a supporter of Valencia CF, I hope this rumor is just that and Lopez doesn’t leave the Rapids for Valencia. VCF owner Peter Lim is a joke of an owner, broken promises, having had 4 managers over 2 seasons in 2016, selling players and not having brought in any top quality players. VCF currently sit 17th in La Liga, one spot above relegation as the storied club of Valencia CF is clearly in shambles.
