Road trippin’… Switchbacks v Real Monarchs..

With the majority of MLS on a bye this week, including the Rapids, it was decided a couple of days ago to make the short road trip down to Colorado Springs for the Switchbacks F.C. USL match against Real Monarchs at Sand Creek Stadium.

We made this trip for two reasons, one to scout the Switchbacks before their visit to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park next Tuesday night for a 4th round match up with the Rapids in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The other reason is it’s against Real Monarchs, our Rocky Mountain Cup rival Real Salt Lake’s USL team. So it gives me another reason to hate Salt Lake, as if I honestly needed another reason.

Switchbacks F.C. looked sharp in their pink jerseys which they wore for Cancer Awareness Night, last night.

Here are a few photos from last night’s match.

Observations from the game.

Switchbacks F.C. won 2-1 over Real Monarchs SLC, their third win over Salt Lake in 3 matches so far this season. There was a former Rapids appearance by Davy Armstrong in the 86th minute of the game for the Switchbacks. There were a few times during the match last night where things became chippy and testy between the two teams. I think it’s safe to say that the rivalry between Salt Lake and Colorado at least on the field has moved a few miles south of Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Attendance was 2012.

The Switchbacks are quick and also pass the ball very well and arent afraid to fire off a shot from long distance. Both Colorado Springs goals coming from 20 and 30 yards out. I dont think they will be able to penetrate the Rapids back line on Tuesday depending on who Pablo/Claudio has in the starting XI. Defensively the Switchbacks are very physical, committing 12 fouls in last night’s match, although that number should’ve been a lot higher. The Switchbacks are currently on a 3 game winning streak, looking to extend it to 4 on Tuesday.

I’ll post more pictures from last night’s game later. Until then we’ve got 48 hours until the US Open Cup match on Tuesday at DSG Park. Go Rapids!
